SILVER PAIR-CASED VERGE WATCH [OUTER CASE NOT ORIGINAL]. Full-plate; fusee. Verge escapement; steel 3-arm balance. White enamel dial, Roman hours I-XII, Arabic minutes 5-60. Replacement gold hands. Silver pair-cases; inner with hallmark and maker's mark. Outer repoussé showing Cleopatra receiving the basket of figs. Although contemporary it is perhaps not original, as it is large for the inner case and scratch numbered 852 on the rim. Silver pair-cased verge watch: Cleopatra Receiving the Basket of Figs. The movement has square baluster pillars, fusee, four-wheel train and verge escapement. A pierced and engraved foliate balance cock provides bearing for a steel three-arm balance with spiral balance spring and geared regulator. The white enamel dial has hours marked I—XII and minutes 5-60. The gold hands are not original. Of the silver pair cases, the inner is plain with the maker's mark TC with an axe above, for Thomas Carpenter, and the London hallmark for 1778. The silver repoussé outer case has a depiction of 'Cleopatra Receiving the Basket of Figs' within a border of volutes and flowers. Here Cleopatra sits to the right, plucking the asp from the basket of figs, which is proffered by a kneeling attendant. Between the two principal figures stands a distraught maid. In the background is an elaborate arrangement of baroque columns and arcades, as it happens very appropriate to the evocation of Hellenistic Alexandria. A third tortoise-shell covered outer case with silver rims is a later association. The movement is signed 'B. Bennett London 6497'. Outer and middle cases are lined with chamois leather.
